Safety Belt Exemptions
Driver or Passenger
- Commercial or U.S. postal service vehicle that makes frequent stops
- In a bus, motorcycle, moped
- In a motor vehicle manufactured before January 1, 1965
- Motor vehicle not required to be equipped with safety belts under federal law
- Rural postal carrier while serving rout
- Who has a written verification from a physician for physical or medical reasons
Passengers Only
- Children 8 years or older but less than 16 in front seat of a pickup without an extended cab or jump seats, if all available belts are used
- Children 8 years or older but less than 16 in rear seats if all available belts are used and driver and all front seat passengers are properly belted
- School bus passengers (driver must be belted)
How to Properly Install a Safety Seat
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every year, thousands of young children are killed or injured in crashes, mainly because 3 out of every 4 children in child safety seats are not properly secured, or even worse, not restrained at all.
