Hank Sower, a Taylor resident since 1956, was an accomplished baseball player, wrestler and tennis player at Taylor Center. As an adult, he played on two world championship softball teams and was named to the all-tournament team.
He began coaching Little League baseball in 1971 and has coached in all four of the Taylor leagues. He served on the Taylor Northeast Little League board of directors as an umpire in chief for three years.
After many years of coaching boys and girls basketball at the elementary and junior high school levels, Sower coached high school basketball and softball at Light and Life Christian School. Also known for coaching adult basketball and softball teams, he was instrumental in bringing the Men’s Christian fellowship Basketball League to Taylor.
Sower secured a $10,000 donation for the construction of the Richard K. Gillingham softball diamond, located at Clarence Randall Elementary School. The diamond was named to honor Sower’s uncle, a Vietnam War hero.
